It’s easy to think of September as an end to summer fun. What it ends in summer vacations and hot, sunny days, though, September makes up for with downtown entertainment. All month long, Main Street will be abuzz with live music, themed 5k runs, farmers’ markets and celebratory festivals.
Northern Appalachian Folk Festival
September 9-10, 2017
Celebrated annually the weekend after Labor Day, the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival features a collection of activities rooted in folk culture, as a tribute to the Appalachian region. Admission to the musical performances, art exhibits and various workshops is free. The event will also feature a Children’s Alley with games and activities tailored to younger audiences. Oak Park, Illinois
Oaktoberfest celebrates the changing seasons in the Oak Park village near downtown Chicago. Live music, craft beer, local food and family-friendly activities will fill Downtown Oak Park for the weekend. Cohansey Riverfest and Bridgeton Crabfest

Bridgeton, New Jersey
This annual event in southern New Jersey is two festivals rolled into one. The event celebrates Bridgeton’s history along the Cohansey River with a kayak race and a crab dinner. H Street Festival

The H Street Festival spans 11 blocks in the nation’s capital, bringing together a diverse collection of musicians, dancers, poets, businesses and more. The event attracts some 150,000 people to the H Street Corridor, where the commercial building vacancy rate has shrunk from 75 percent to under 5 percent since the festival began. Downtown Tyler Film Festival

The seventh-annual Downtown Tyler Film Festival will feature more than 25 original movies made by directors from Texas and around the world. Each day of the festival has a different theme, with one day devoted to movies from around the world and one day devoted to movies Texas. Each film runs approximately 80 minutes, and viewers can enjoy free popcorn and drinks in the lobby prior to each showing. More information is available from www.tylerfilmfest.com.
