Since 2011, the Art Lounge has kept Spartanburg, South Carolina, funky. The custom-framing shop and local art gallery highlights the community’s creativity in a laid-back, pet-friendly atmosphere. Over the last eight years, this local business has become a staple in its community. This year, Art Lounge has earned recognition as Independent We Stand’s 2019 Independent Small Business of the Year.
The Independent Small Business of the Year—or Indie—Award honors locally owned businesses that go above and beyond for their community. The Art Lounge embodies this principle through its support of local artists and local causes. The shop’s art gallery features more than 20 local artists, as well as some regional artists. Twice a year, the Art Lounge hosts an outdoor artists market, allowing 20 local vendors to showcase and sell their work to the community. Through these activities, the Art Lounge has helped local artists sell more than $50,000 of artwork to the Spartanburg community and surrounding cities.
At the same time, the Art Lounge has also helped local charities and non-profit organizations raise more than $25,000 through unique events. As a pet-friendly business, it’s only fitting that many of these events have given back to animal welfare organizations. For instance, the Art Lounge has raised money to build more dog fencing at the local animal shelter and serves as a drop-off location for Monroe’s Mighty Mission, which provides food and other supplies to animals in need.
The Art Lounge represents owner Brandi Dice’s passion for creativity and community. Dice has worked in the custom-framing business for 15 years and opened her own shop eight years ago. Since then, Dice has cultivated a welcoming environment where customers can browse, mingle and give back—all alongside their well-behaved, furry friends. With the Art Lounge, Dice has turned a professional framing business into an important foundation for the entire community.
As this year’s Indie Award winner, the Art Lounge will receive a Grand Prize Package valued at $25,000. This includes a branding, advertising and public relations makeover by the Meridian Group, a $1,000 Stihl equipment certificate and more. These prizes will help the Art Lounge continue serving its Spartanburg community in new and creative ways.
