A & B Paint Supply in LaSalle, Illinois, offers customers “a paint for every purpose.” Recently, this family-owned business turned what otherwise would have been a slow sales month into an opportunity to sell paint for a particularly important purpose. The store’s “Buy 5, Give 1” campaign contributed 54 gallons of paint to the nearby LaSalle Veterans’ Home.
The LaSalle Veterans’ Home provides skilled nursing services for more than 180 veterans, including up to 40 special needs veterans. The facility sits on a residential campus of more than four acres. For the veterans in its care, the LaSalle Veterans’ Home is a rehabilitation facility, a gathering place and, of course, a home.
On a recent visit, A & B Paint Supply General Manager Brian Layhew saw an opportunity to make the facility feel less like a hospital and more like a home.
“The place itself felt like a hospital, and not in a good way,” Layhew says. “It felt nice yet disregarded to a point.”
He spoke with a facility representative about the need for a facelift. “Funding for things like paint was always put on the back burner,” Layhew says. “When they did finally get funding for repainting, it was always provided by the lowest bidder. It was usually the cheapest of the cheap that wasn’t washable and didn’t last.”
With that, A & B Paint Supply set out to help. During the month of February, the Buy 5, Give 1 campaign donated one gallon of high-quality PPG Wonder-Pro paint for every five gallons of paint purchased. At the end of the month, Layhew announced on A & B Paint Supply’s Facebook page that the store had sold 260 gallons of paint. Thanks to an additional donation by the local American Legion, A & B Paint Supply’s campaign donated 54 gallons of paint to the veterans’ home.
“That’s going to cover 21,600 square feet,” Layhew says.
For Layhew, the donation was personal. Alongside his career in the family business, Layhew has served 19 years in the Air National Guard. During his service, he has spent 14 years as a C-130 flight engineer and has completed five deployments to the Middle East.
“In the end, I’m truly blessed and excited to see our small community come together for this and be able to provide more than just a monetary donation to the veterans’ home,” he says. “This will be something that they can use, that will last and provide enjoyment for many years. Frankly, I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.”
