Last year, Color Haven Paint & Supply, a local PPG Pittsburgh Paints dealer in Fremont, Ohio, donated more than 100 gallons of paint to refurbish the nearby Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums. Thanks to the donation, the presidential center – America’s oldest such facility – celebrated its centennial anniversary by unveiling freshly painted walls in warm, inviting colors, along with a series of other renovations. Now, Color Haven has paid – or, rather, painted – it forward once again, donating funds from Independent We Stand’s recent cash mob to the presidential center.
The IWS cash mob is a quarterly drawing that encourages locally owned, independent businesses to give back to their communities. In recognition that many such businesses already maintain a deep involvement with the community, businesses are entered into the drawing based on the charitable work they’ve done in the past. Color Haven’s donation to the Hayes presidential library last year earned it a spot in the most recent cash mob drawing.
As the winner of the cash mob, Color Haven could choose a beneficiary for its $1000 check. Fittingly, Color Haven decided to put the money toward the presidential library, adding another layer to the local paint shop’s relationship with the center.
“Giving back to the community remains of the utmost importance to us,” said John Havens, owner of Color Haven. “As America’s first presidential library, the Rutherford B. Hayes center is a local landmark in our community. It’s on us, as members of the community, to take care of it.”
During the centennial renovation last year, Havens brought the walls of the presidential center to life. With his store’s impactful paint donation, which was supported by PPG’s Paint for a Change initiative, Havens envisioned a more inviting atmosphere for the center. Rather than stark white, the walls of the center now display warm red and burgundy tones. The result is a facility that honors the presidential title, while reflecting the community’s warm welcome to visitors.
Beyond the donations, Havens maintains a position on the development committee of the presidential center. His involvement with the center not only beautifies a public space, but it also paves the way for a longstanding relationship between a local business and a local landmark. It’s that kind of support that will keep the community strong for years to come.
