Colorado Main Street Provides a Customizable Framework for Community

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to downtown preservation. In Colorado, the statewide Main Street program customizes a strategy for each local community based on its unique needs and strengths. This technique allows individual communities to flourish with the support of a statewide network.

The Colorado Main Street program works all across the vast, historic state. From mountain towns like Steamboat Springs to plains communities like Lamar, the state Department of Local Affairs advises local communities on the importance of historic preservation and the economic benefits of downtown revitalization. This work brings more than $100 million in public and private investment to Colorado communities annually and generates hundreds of full-time and part-time jobs for Colorado workers.

Much of this success comes from the Colorado Main Street program’s detailed approach. The program provides a customizable framework for local communities. Rather that distributing a single checklist for all communities to follow, the Colorado Main Street program creates a roadmap based on each community’s goals, with action items that change over time. This approach is also accessible, starting small so that communities can take each step at their own pace. What’s more, communities don’t have to go through the motions on their own. The Colorado Main Street program provides holistic support along the way, leveraging resources and volunteers to put each goal into action.

In this way, the Colorado Main Street program transforms local communities with purpose. More than implementing a templated process, the program helps each community champion its own history and culture. That way, the result is more authentic and more meaningful for the local community.

With a customized approach, the Colorado Main Street program bridges the gap between the state and local levels. The result is a stronger state built on historic and sustainable communities.
