Indie Record Stores Celebrate Music

April 21, 2012 will mark the 5th annual Record Store Day. All around the world independently owned record stores are preparing for this breakout opportunity.  At least 1,400 indie music stores in the US and many in over 20 other countries are expected to partake in some way. This is not an event you’ll want to miss. It’s anticipated to be bigger than ever. Record Store Day has been referenced in various media outlets over the last few years including: USA Today, Associated Press, the Washington Post, and Rolling Stone; it has been talked about on hit TV shows Saturday Night Live and American Idol.

Record Store DayEvery third Saturday in April, Record Store Day aims to bring together independently owned music stores, friends, neighbors, artists, big-time and aspiring, and fans alike to celebrate a shared passion for great music in its original form, vinyl. Independent Record Stores, in partnership with their record labels, across the globe have already begun to announce releases, box-sets and limited edition vinyl to be made available as a one day promotion exclusively for Record Store Day.

Each participating indie store is allowed to choose how and to what extent they will be involved in the event. Don’t be surprised to see special performances, block parties, all-day cookouts, exclusive store promotions and meet and greets with rising artists. When Record Store Day kicked off for the first time, Metallica started off the festivities with a special performance in San Francisco.

Not only will Record Store Day boost sales for independently owned music stores around the world, but it will give them a chance to get their small businesses noticed, so they can branch out to other target markets. From Record Store Day in 2009 to Record Store Day in 2010, sales for independent music stores had increased 109%. *

Record Store Day is managed by the Music Monitor Network and organized in conjunction with the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS), and Alliance of Independent Media Stores. Visit their website to find and contact a participating store in your area to discover the offerings you can’t miss out on.
