For nine years, Stephen Flowers has postponed his own Christmas celebrations to spend the day in his hair salon, offering free haircuts and a hot meal to hundreds of those in need. The idea for Grand Christmas started after Flowers was approached one Christmas morning by a homeless man begging for money. Instead of money, Flowers drove him for a meal, then offered a free haircut. “I spent half my Christmas with this complete stranger in need. I thought if I could do that for one person, there’s got to be others.” Word spread to area shelters, and neighbors pitched in to knit hats, buy presents and cook. A local hotel offered its banquet room. Last year, hundreds came out for a meal and Christmas cheer. But it’s not just Grand Christmas that keeps Flowers busy. In December, he hosts Deck the Walls to raise money for an emergency housing shelter. He buys skate decks for local artists to paint, and auctions them off to raise several thousand dollars. In October, he enlists the burliest men in town for Beards for Breasts. His crew grows out beards, then auctions them off to raise money for the Lehigh Valley Cancer Support Community. He also puts collection bins throughout town for Re-Bra, which collects and cleans donated bras for women in need. In August, he hosts No Child Left Behind so every kid can start the school year right. The event provides more than 300 free haircuts, 150+ backpacks, and school supplies for kids in need. “I got divorced when my son was little and struggled to get him what he needed,” Flowers says of his motivation. “Family, friends and clients (at the salon) shared things with us. So many people cared about us, and I want other kids to have that.”
