This past weekend, Independent We Stand was honored to share in the excitement as STIHL Inc. came together with the City of Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation and locally owned K & D Round’s Landscape Services to beautify Beach Garden Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The project celebrated the Professional Landcare Network’s (PLANET) annual day of service in recognition of Earth Day. It also happened to take place just in time for National Volunteer week.
Several local businesses came together to give back to the community as well as the environment.
“As a locally owned business, we live and work in the community so we feel it’s important to give back to the community,” said Joel Vanscoy, one of the owners of K & D Round’s Landscape Services and a Premium Member of Independent We Stand.
Another Independent We Stand business provided a local lunch for volunteers during the two-day project. “We try to support our community to make it a better place for us to live and do business in,” said Barry Akers, owner of PMS Deli.
The event was a great example of PLANET’s Come Alive Outside initiative, which demonstrates the power of the outdoors to beautify communities and enrich people’s lives. Volunteers worked together to cultivate and redefine flower beds, prune trees and shrubs, create a wetland garden, and install a rock bed to control runoff erosion. Even the younger generation joined in on the fun! Children of STIHL Inc. employees participated in planting daylilies in the wetland garden.
After completing the service project, STIHL Inc., Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation and K & D Round’s Landscape Services dedicated the new wetland garden to Virginia Beach Middle School, which is located in front of Beach Garden Park and uses the park athletic fields, and to the citizens of Virginia Beach.
