Los Alamos MainStreet Keeps the Community Creative

The city of Los Alamos, New Mexico, has a history like no other. Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos began as a secret city during World War II, when the United States government used the then-remote location as the site of the Manhattan Project. Today, visitors can tour the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Los Alamos to learn about the history of the atomic bomb.

The atomic bomb gave Los Alamos its start, but community groups like Los Alamos MainStreet have since put it on the map. Los Alamos MainStreet makes the atomic city a vibrant place to live, work and visit. With a focus on downtown revitalization that preserves the city’s unique history, Los Alamos MainStreet creates economic opportunities for local businesses. Drawing on the city’s innovative roots, Los Alamos MainStreet also keeps the city creative.

In particular, Los Alamos has the only Creative District in New Mexico. With support and leadership from Los Alamos MainStreet, the Los Alamos Creative District provides a space for engaging events and programs that highlight local culture, arts and science. The Main Street program has also worked to create projectY cowork Los Alamos. Named after the laboratory that developed the Manhattan Project, this coworking space offers entrepreneurs, freelancers, students and others a place to work, network and innovate in downtown Los Alamos.

For small businesses, Los Alamos MainStreet offers a program that encourages them to bring ideas to the table. The organization offers grants to help fund projects and events that will take place in the downtown area. These grants have helped beautify and revitalize downtown businesses, making them more attractive places to work, shop and support. They also give individual business owners the freedom to come up with their own creative ideas for downtown development.

Through these initiatives, Los Alamos MainStreet preserves the community’s unique history while inspiring locals to create a vibrant future. For more information about Los Alamos MainStreet, visit www.losalamosmainstreet.com.
