Matt’s: Supplies, Tools and Family Values

It may be 2014, but it’s still the good old days at Matt’s Building Materials in Pharr and San Benito, Texas. Owned by Danny Smith and his three sons, Jeremy, Isaac and Ben, Matt’s serves the Rio Grande Valley with quality products, community partnerships and family values.

Matt’s Building Materials opened in 1969, making it one of the oldest businesses in the area. Although times have changed since then, the owners’ commitment to traditional values hasn’t wavered a bit. Matt’s is closed on Sundays and holidays, and the father-son team treats every customer like another member of the family.

“When my boys came into the business, one thing I told them was that if we don’t earn the business, we don’t deserve the business,” Danny Smith says. “You need to go out and earn the business, do the best you can, do everything with integrity and do it the right way.”

Danny’s fatherly wisdom has definitely carried on to the next generation of Smiths. Jeremy, Isaac and Ben, who collectively go by the “Band of Brothers,” enjoy working together and maintaining their father’s traditions.

“We’re a team, and we work as a team,” Ben says. “When you come here you’re going to be treated like family.”

In fact, this father-son team treats the entire community like family. Matt’s Building Materials awards $15,000 worth of college scholarships to local students each year, and the owners work closely with local ministries to fund building projects. They also support the local Police Athletic League Program by donating supplies to renovate unusable facilities into places for youth recreation.

Over the years, the Smith family’s values have turned into real success for both the business and the customers. In 2012, the North American Retail Hardware Association named Isaac Smith Young Retailer of the Year. The business has grown to two locations with a fleet of 14 delivery trucks to cover the entire region.

As Danny Smith says, “You thought the good old days were gone, but we’re still here.” Danny and his sons work hard in and out of the store to support their family and their community. Times will continue changing, but Matt’s Building Materials will always remain a family-first operation.
