The first thing you notice when you meet Christine Osborne is her infectious smile. You can’t help but share her smile as she tells you about her pride and joy – Wonder Works. Wonder Works is a specialty toy and gift store with two locations in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant SC. It’s also a place where you can find a plenty of giggles, laughs, smiles and “aha” moments.
When Christine and co-owner Dan Morrisey opened Wonder Works in 1990, they set out to build a toy store that was different from the big box toy stores and they have succeeded wonderfully. Wonder Works is filled from floor to ceiling with toys and gifts that make you do as what the store name implies “wonder.” You see they made a decision early on that they didn’t want to sell the kind of toys that parents use as “baby sitters.” They sell toys that encourage interaction between children and their parents. Toys that inspire curiosity and playfulness in both young and old alike. In fact, it is not unusual to walk into Wonder Works on any given day to find parents having just as much fun as their kids.
Christine is also a big “buy local” advocate. She is an active member of the American Specialty Toy Retailers Association and Low Country Local First. In addition, she “walks the walk” and features toys and gifts made locally from artists and craftsman from the area.
If you are ever in the Charleston SC area please stop buy Wonder Works. You’ll have a blast and feel good about “buying local.”
