In continued celebration of small and independent businesses, Independent We Stand will host the sixth annual Indie Awards beginning September 12. The Indie Awards, also known as the Independent Small Business of the Year awards, highlight the real value that small businesses bring to their communities. For instance, small businesses have been found to create twice as much sales activity per square foot of retail space than big box stores. They’ve also been found to return almost four times the amount of economic activity per square foot than those big boxes. For these reasons, and many others, small and independent businesses make their communities better places to live, work and prosper.
The Indie Awards are all about celebrating the little guys that go above and beyond for their communities. Previous winners have included A Dodson’s, a retail and gift shop with three Virginia locations which features a round-up program for charities of its customers’ choosing and Mike’s Community Cup, a small coffee shop in SeaTac, WA that has risen over $10,000 for community organizations including schools, hospitals, sports teams and many others. Trio Hardware & Paint, in Plainview, NY, took home the well-deserved award in 2013. This locally owned Do it Best hardware store not only sponsors little league and other sports teams and a high school robotics team, they also offer two scholarships annually.
This year’s winning business will receive an impressive prize package, valued at $10,000. Prizes include $5,000 in cash; a $1,000 STIHL gift certificate; a “Small Business Web Starter Package” from independent web design firm, The Meridian Group; a three-day/two-night stay at an independent beach resort in Virginia Beach, VA (valued at $1,000); a plaque to display at the winner’s business, as well as public relations and social media recognition. Quarter and Semifinalists will receive a free Premium Membership with Independent We Stand, for life.
The winners of the Indie Awards are selected via online voting and a panel of judges. Independent We Stand asks consumers and small businesses to be vocal about “buying local” simply by going online starting September 12, to nominate deserving small businesses. Anyone – including business owners, employees, friends and family members – can nominate a small business for the award on the Indie Awards Website. Any locally owned and operated business in the U.S. can be nominated and as soon as a business is nominated, it can begin receiving votes – so nominate early and vote often, keeping in mind the public can only vote once per 24 hours.
Nominations and quarterfinalist voting takes place September 12 through November 13. Semifinalist voting begins on November 21 and ends on December 11. It all comes to a celebratory close on December 14, when the grand prize winner will be announced.
