Since 1981, Mount Vernon Building Center has supplied the Pacific Northwest with employee expertise and quality building materials. This independent, locally owned business has made a name for itself overseas.
Mount Vernon Building Center, located in Skagit County, Wash., was founded to serve the surrounding counties with high quality products including lumber, windows, doors and cabinetry, at a fair and reasonable price. Eg Gegen and Kevin Kok, co-owner of Mount Vernon Building Center, say that one of their business’s strengths is that it specializes in core products within the building materials lines.“We leave all of the ‘fluff’ to the box stores,” Ed says.
Long-term, knowledgeable employees also help to set Mount Vernon Building Center apart from its big-box competition.Ed himself has been in the business for more than 30 years, and his employees have hundreds of combined years of experience.“We have employees that have been with us 20 years, 10 years, seven years – all long-term folks,” Ed says.
Mount Vernon Building Center’s specialized nature and vast expertise has propelled the company into significant growth and expansion over the past 30 years.Beginning in their new location in 1991, the company has served not only the local building community, but also Alaska and the international construction market, distributing products throughout the Pacific Rim and Japan.
Despite the store’s international growth, Ed and his team understand the importance of maintaining a locally owned business.Ed shops locally whenever possible and encourages others to do so because of local businesses’ loyalty and longevity.“We local businesses support our community,” he says.“We employ our neighbors and friends, and local businesses will be here for the long haul.”
