Shop Local Beaufort Finds New Opportunities for Local Businesses

Beaufort, South Carolina, sits along the Atlantic coast between Charleston and Savannah, Georgia. In fact, the city is so coastal that it technically sits on an island, accessible by bridges to South Carolina’s mainland. It’s a picturesque place to call home or to visit, in large part thanks to the unique local businesses that line the charming, coastal streets.

The Shop Local Beaufort campaign supports those local business. The campaign began by highlighting Beaufort businesses during the holiday shopping season. The Shop Local Beaufort website and social media pages promoted holiday gift ideas available at local businesses in and around downtown Beaufort.

Over time, the campaign has grown to a year-round effort. Shop Local Beaufort promotes local restaurants, retailers and events, while educating consumers about the importance of buying local.

Since its launch, Shop Local Beaufort has found new opportunities for local businesses to promote themselves. The campaign is largely the work of Ginger Wareham, who found Beaufort as a new opportunity for her family.

“We always say we became adults in Beaufort,” Wareham says. Originally from New Orleans, Wareham moved to Beaufort because of a job opportunity in town for her husband. Years later, they still call Beaufort home, raising two kids and running their own local business, a boutique digital marketing agency called PickleJuice.

After moving to town, Wareham saw a need for a campaign like Shop Local Beaufort. “There wasn’t anything like it,” she says. “I thought, well if nobody else is doing it, we will.”

The need for a buy local campaign became particularly apparent when Wareham saw turnover in the market. “It’s really sad, but we’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go,” she says. “It’s a tough market.”

So far, the response to Shop Local Beaufort has Wareham optimistic. “Everybody took to it. There’s a lot of people who have seen it take off and want to see more of it,” she says. “Hopefully it will keep these local businesses that make Beaufort unique here.”
