The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its innovative workforce, but there’s more to the community than tech start-ups and app developers. In the area’s West Berkeley neighborhood, local design and building experts work together in an innovative partnership that furthers the local home improvement and design market. Known as the West Berkeley Design Loop, the community has become a hub for creativity and cooperation.
If you’re familiar with the area, the West Berkeley Design Loop runs along San Pablo Avenue and turns west on Gilman Street and Ashby Avenue. It sits just across the bay from San Francisco. The West Berkeley neighborhood features the highest concentration of independent design and building professionals and home improvement merchants in the Bay Area. The Loop itself boasts dozens of these local businesses and more than 50 local restaurants.
More than a geographic hub for home improvement and design, the West Berkeley Design Loop serves as a tool to further the local business community. Members of the Loop work together in the spirit of “co-opetition.” Rather than competing for business, these local retailers and service providers build each other up. They commit to offering stellar customer service and high-quality products – and if they can’t find a solution for a customer, they recommend a nearby business that can. Through cross-promotion, Loop members are able to keep business in the community, even if it’s not at their store.
Members of the West Berkeley Design Loop don’t just cross-promote through word-of-mouth recommendations. Members are also featured on the West Berkeley Design Loop directory and brochure, and members can also take advantage of group advertising opportunities and social media promotion. A West Berkeley Design Loop membership also comes with a Buy Local Berkeley membership. Similar to the West Berkeley Design Loop, Buy Local Berkeley raises awareness of local businesses in the broader Berkeley community.
Through a system of “co-opetition” and a commitment to creativity, the West Berkeley Design Loop helps local businesses thrive in the Bay Area market. For more information about the West Berkeley Design Loop, visit www.westberkeleydesignloop.org.
